It is thought that the name comes from the Belgian town of Duffel, known since the 15th century for the production of a thick woolen fabric, called “Duffel Cloth.” The design of the Duffle coat as a garment dates back to 1800, designed by outerwear manufacturer John Partridge, who introduced a long jacket in Duffel fabric with a large hood and toggle buttons. It was adopted by the British Navy for its features: the large volume that allowed it to be worn over a military uniform, a large hood for protection, a practical and quick buttoning, and large patch pockets. The Duffel wool cloth was naturally heat-insulating and water-resistant. Our Duffle Coat is inspired by this historic garment.
