The polo shirt has a fascinating history that takes us far away geographically. We are in India, during the colonial period, when the British discovered the game of polo—a very popular sport played on horseback with the aim of striking a small ball with a mallet. Polo players wore shirts with an opening at the neck and a collar. British officers brought back both the sport and the shirt, linking the garmentʼs name to the sport itself. The polo shirt was absorbed into Western culture, becoming part of sportswear and later adopted in tennis and rugby. By the late 1800s/early 1900s, it had effectively become a widely used garment, associated in particular with American clothing. This is the inspiration from the sporting world behind this sweater, which recalls a rugby polo shirt, with bold stripes and a contrasting collar. The knit has a very compact feel (like an old sports jersey) while remaining lightweight and comfortable.
