From varsity jackets, we’ve redesigned a versatile layering jacket. Known as “letterman jackets”—for the large letter patch symbolizing achievement in sports—these jackets became popular at Ivy League universities in the U.S., originally made for athletes. They were traditionally crafted in boiled wool or melton, compact and stiff materials known for durability, often featuring a low collar, boxy fit, and snap button closure. Some versions included ribbed hems and contrasting fabrics. We lightened this garment by replacing the coarse boiled wool with a wool blend (derived from fleece, usually 100% polyester, here elevated by a high percentage of wool), making it soft, comfortable, and lightweight while retaining thermal qualities.
