Opoggio was founded at the end of 2020. After years of working in the design world, Giorgio decided it was time to embark on a personal journey in this field.
His relationship with light as an object dates back to his childhood when, in a dictatorship-era Romania, citizens had access to electricity for only two hours a day. It was during these two hours that Giorgio could watch GOPO, a cartoon created by the visionary Romanian director Ion Popescu Gopo. Gopo’s pursuit of knowledge and, in a way, of light and enthusiasm was a primary source of inspiration, to the point that GOPO became one of Giorgio’s nicknames.
The brand’s name itself is inspired by the fusion of GOPO and IO (Italian for “I”), creating a bridge between a child who dreamed of light and an adult who now makes others dream with it. Giorgio has chosen Milan as the home for his project.
Roberto, our C.E.O., had a conversation with Giorgio, founder and creative director of Opoggio, reflecting on the origins, aspirations, and goals of both brands.
How did the Opoggio project come to life?
I come from a family of wood sculptors spanning five generations. I have only recently pursued this call to beauty—during the pandemic, I took a break from everything I was doing (still within the design field) and decided to start this collection of lamps. Not just lamps, but sculptures, meticulously designed down to the smallest detail.
We create everything in our workshops here in Italy, using high-quality materials like brass and crystal, bringing a bit of the lamp’s history back to life. There is a saying that is very close to my heart: the idea of creating lamps was born in the dark.
You mentioned that you create everything in your workshops here in Italy. Can you tell us about your vision of Made in Italy?
The greatest asset of Made in Italy is precisely the economic fabric we have here. I’m talking about small suppliers, small businesses, imagine that a lamp requires 1,000 components. Your job is to bring everything together, knowing where to find each piece, all within an hour’s distance. And I truly believe that this can only be found in Italy.
I’m fortunate to be close to Brianza, a truly unique region. I have created and worked all over the world, for example, in Japan, but there is no other place where you can find what you find here. And then, the culture of beauty runs so deep that simply looking around is enough to inspire you to create anything.
What about the collaboration with Vintage55?
You’ll see it at the opening on Thursday evening (April 10 in Milan, at the Vintage55 store in Corso Garibaldi, ed.) during the Salone del Mobile. I started creating this lamp after stepping into this store. Physically, it’s a small lamp, but aesthetically and in terms of inspiration, it’s a grand piece, born from an incredible amount of work.
Made from 55 layers of hand-worked brass, I believe it perfectly embodies the essence of our collaboration, the symbol of a journey that begins this year and will continue. In fact, our lamps will be integrated into Vintage55 stores, becoming an extension of the beauty that both they and we create.
