Selvedge denim is one of the most sought-after and premium material by denim enthusiasts. The selvedge (derived from “self-finished edge”) is technically the edge of the fabric, usually in white and red, which prevents the fabric from fraying. Selvedge denim was traditionally woven on vintage looms that produced a durable, high-quality material. These characteristics have remained unchanged over time, but they have also made selvedge denim rarer and more valuable, as it requires longer production times and higher fabric consumption in the making of jeans. The selvedge is usually placed along the side seam of the jeans, so it becomes visible when the hem is cuffed.

In the 1970s, Japan revived selvedge denim production, restoring old looms and perfecting the process, making it synonymous with artisanal excellence. Ripstop is a fabric renowned for its resistance to tearing and ripping. Its structure is designed to effectively limit the expansion of tears into larger holes, a crucial feature in situations where the fabric is under extreme stress, which is why it is particularly used in outdoor applications. Ripstop is woven with reinforcement threads in a grid pattern, usually at intervals of 5 to 8mm, creating a three-dimensional pattern in the fabric’s weave. The grid “locks” tears and holes, preventing them from spreading further. “Ripstop” refers to the construction of the fabric which can be made from various materials.
Ripstop is a relatively recent fabric, with its development dating back to the 20th century, specifically during World War II. When the U.S. army needed a durable fabric for parachutes, tents, and general military equipment. Its strength and versatility are the main reasons it is the best choice for all extreme environments, such as outdoor activities.

One of the key factors that sets Japanese denim apart is the use of vintage shuttle looms. These looms, which date back to the early 20th century are characterized by a slow weaving process that creates a denser, more durable fabric with a distinct texture and character. Japan has a long history of indigo dyeing, known as “aizome.” This tradition has been carried into denim production, where many Japanese manufacturers still use natural indigo dyes. The slow, labor-intensive process of rope-dyeing, where the yarn is repeatedly dipped in indigo, gives Japanese denim its rich, deep color that fades beautifully over time.

Early civilizations already began using natural dyes to color threads before weaving them into striped or checkered patterns. It is undoubtedly a fundamental technique for the creation of tapestries. The inspiration for the fabric’s construction comes from sweatshirts made in the early 1900s, crafted using special Japanese looms that produced a soft cloth with a diagonal weave and a loose, open loopback (the twisted thread visible on the reverse side). The knitting process requires longer production times, making this kind of fabric rare and sought-after.
The mélange gray color is achieved by weaving threads of different colors, from raw cotton to various shades of gray, creating what is known as ‘slubs,’ which are the visible irregularities that bring the fabric to life and make each garment unique. Thanks to the loose weave, the sweatshirt is extremely comfortable.

Moleskin is a durable and compact fabric characterized by a very tight inweave, with a structure similar to twill but denser. It is usually composed of warp and weft threads of the same color and material. One side of the fabric is brushed or frosted, which enhances its wind resistance (already partly due to the density) and general softness. The soft, fuzzy effect gives Moleskin its name (literally “mole skin”). This final process is also known as “peaching” because the texture of the fabric resembles the surface of a peach.
Moleskin has ancient origins, likely dating back to medieval Europe, and was used to create garments for farmers or hunters—generally for those who needed a fabric that was durable, comfortable, wind-resistant, and somewhat water-repellent.
From the 19th century, thanks to its durability and density, it began to spread as a fabric for factory workers, especially in France, where foundry workers started using it to protect themselves from splashes of molten metal.
Over time, moleskin garments started being identified by color. The most iconic were blue for French mechanics, white for painters, black for carpenters, and gray or green for military use, with the West German army specifically adopting it in the 1950s.

This construction gives canvas great strength and good resistance to wear, making it suitable for technical and heavy-duty uses. Depending on its weight and finish, canvas can range from coarse and rugged to finer and softer, while still retaining its durability and versatility.

Seersucker is a lightweight and breathable fabric, recognizable by its puckered, striped or checkered appearance, achieved through a special weaving technique that alternates tight and slack threads. This contrast creates a crinkled (wavy or wrinkled) effect that promotes air circulation and enhances the feeling of freshness. It doesn’t require ironing, is naturally wrinkle-resistant, and for this reason, it is highly valued in summer clothing, especially for shirts, trousers, and lightweight suits.

The name comes from the Persian term “shir o shekar” (شیر و شکر), meaning “milk and sugar”, a clear reference to the contrast between the fabric’s smooth and crinkled sections—just like the combination of two different textures. During the colonial period, the fabric was exported to Europe and later to the Americas, becoming popular in British and French colonies for its lightness and breathability. In the 19th and 20th centuries, seersucker was adopted in industrial and work settings in the United States as a fabric for work uniforms, thanks to its durability and easy maintenance. From the 1920s onward, it was also reinterpreted in the fashion world, especially in men’s summer clothing: the iconic seersucker suits with fine stripes became widely popular in the Southern states and were later embraced by the Ivy League.

Cotton parachute canvas is a densely structured fabric developed to deliver high performance in terms of lightness, mechanical strength, and compactness. Thanks to its tight plain weave, it offers excellent abrasion resistance while maintaining a soft and natural feel. It is easily compressible, foldable, highly breathable, and well-suited for making functional, versatile, and high-performing garments in variable climate conditions.
Parachute canvas originated with the early experiments in aviation and parachuting, when natural materials like silk and linen were used for their lightness and strength. The real breakthrough came during World War II, when silk—mainly produced in Asia—became scarce and was replaced by nylon, a newly invented synthetic material developed in the United States. Nylon proved to be ideal: lightweight, strong, and easy to produce in large quantities. From then on, it became the standard for both military and civilian parachutes.
After the war, nylon parachute fabric found new life: people repurposed surplus parachutes to make clothing, tents, and even wedding dresses. Today, thanks to more advanced technical versions like ripstop nylon, this fabric is widely used in sports, outdoor activities, and design, while retaining its key qualities of durability, lightness, and versatility.

Gabardine is a fabric with a diagonal weave (twill weave), extremely dense, compact, and durable. It is woven with a very high density of warp threads compared to the weft, which gives it a smooth appearance on the front, a very fine and oblique diagonal pattern, a clean and structured drape, and good resistance to water and wind (especially in versions made of wool or treated cotton).
The angle of the diagonal in gabardine is steeper than in other common twills, giving the fabric an elegant yet technical look.
The name Gabardine probably derives from Spanish, where in the Middle Ages it referred to a type of long, loose cloak.
The decisive turning point came in 1879, when Thomas Burberry, a young British tailor, patented a new type of fabric: a combed cotton with a very dense diagonal weave, treated to be water-resistant yet breathable.
Until then, waterproof clothing was made from heavy oilcloths or rubberized materials, which prevented breathability and were uncomfortable to wear.Burberry thus developed a gabardine that combined protection and comfort, designed for outdoor activities such as hunting, horse riding, and hiking.In 1911, Roald Amundsen also wore garments made of gabardine during the “conquest” of the South Pole. During WWI, Burberry’s innovative gabardine was adopted for the production of a new type of military overcoat for British officers, designed for life in the trenches. The nep effect itself comes from short fibers or slubs that remain in the yarn during spinning, something that older, less refined looms in the mid-20th century Japanese and American mills often produced unintentionally. As denim culture shifted in the late 20th century toward valuing authenticity, character, and visible irregularities, especially within the raw and selvedge denim communities, these speckled fabrics gained recognition as something desirable rather than flawed. Japanese mills in particular embraced the technique, deliberately creating nep yarns to echo the rustic charm of heritage fabrics like Donegal tweed while keeping the classic indigo twill base of denim. Today, nep denim is celebrated as a niche, artisanal fabric, prized for its individuality and the unique way it fades and ages with wear.
